Manual Handling Training for Film, TV & Production Crews
Reduce Risk, Protect Your Crew, and Comply with UK Regulations
Heavy lifting and physical carrying are routine activities across film, television, and production sets. Whether it’s moving lighting rigs, transporting camera equipment, handling set construction materials, or shifting props, crew members are frequently exposed to the risk of injury due to poor manual handling practices.
Our Manual Handling Training course is specifically designed for production environments. It provides cast, crew, and operational staff with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to lift, carry, and move loads safely and effectively – reducing the likelihood of musculoskeletal injuries on set.
What is Manual Handling?
Manual handling is legally defined in the UK as:
“…any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force.”
This includes not only objects such as flight cases, sandbags, and set elements, but also people or animals where relevant. Given the variety and unpredictability of tasks on set, training in proper manual handling techniques is vital for personal safety and production continuity.
Legal Compliance – Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, all employers are legally required to:
- Avoid hazardous manual handling operations where reasonably practicable;
- Assess the risk of injury from any unavoidable manual handling tasks;
- Reduce the risk of harm through control measures, training, and safe systems of work.
It is the responsibility of employers and production companies to ensure that all team members are both trained and competent in manual handling procedures.
